I Hate Being Sick
Ever since I was a little girl I've had rotten kidneys. Actually they work just fine, but they have a tendency to want to create an environment that fosters the development of bacteria rather than get rid of them. When I was about 10 or so, they got so infected that one of my kidneys actually shrank to half its normal size (it's back to normal now, but still has scar tissue). I usually don't get any advanced warning about a pending infection, either, until I'm already really sick. Yesterday morning I woke up feeling just fine. Around 9:30 I started feeling a little achy, so I thought I'd lay down while Renae was snoozing and Nicholas was watching tv. Halfway through Sesame Street (aka 10:30 ish) I was running a small fever and had some really bad chills. Then my back started hurting right by my kidneys, so then I knew exactly what I was dealing with. I called my mom after lunch and asked her if there was any way to get rid of a kidney infection. I knew there wasn't because I've had them before, but I just hate going to the doctor. Fortunately she persuaded me to go. By the time I headed off to see the doctor, my fever was over 101, and I'd been having steady chills for 6 hours! It was indeed a kidney infection. The doctor said it was a really good call that I came in when I did and that I didn't let it go on longer because it was pretty bad. So, now I'm on antibiotics and am feeling much better this morning, though I still have a little headache and some back pain still. I have to go back in for a follow up in two weeks to make sure the infection has really gone away. At least this didn't happen while we were traveling this weekend!

ReplyDeleteOuchie! From what I've heard, kidney infections kill. Have you ever had a kidney stone? I hope I never do. I'm glad you're feelin' better!
