Kids...The Best Exercise
After I had Nicholas, it took what felt like a long time to get into shape again. I was determined to get back into exercising pretty quickly after Renae. I was so lucky with her to have been able to recover so quickly because I didn't want Nicholas to be running circles around me. It has been rather difficult getting into an exercise routine, though. Every time I tried doing Tae Bo or pilates, which I love, Nicholas thought I was playing some sort of game and would try to climb all over me. I would take the kids for a walk, but it's 20 degrees outside...I don't think that would earn me the Mother of the Year award! I thought about getting a gym pass, but I had to be realistic...I would never go. With Brandon and I doing our own version of the Biggest Loser here, I have been determined to find some way to exercise. I got Brandon a pedometer for Christmas, but I was kind of jealous, so I got one, too! We compete daily to see who takes more steps. Our home is pretty small, so it has been hard to get as many steps in as Brandon, who works in a train yard! He was consistently blowing me out of the water. Then I decided to combine having fun with my kids, listening to music, and getting some exercise in. We, meaning the kids and I, have daily dance parties! I'm sure anyone watching us would get a kick out of it because we mostly just jump and spin around, stomp our feet, and play follow-the-leader, but all three of us love it! Renae routinely falls asleep while I hold her, and Nicholas giggles non-stop. I often can get 3-4000 steps in during this time, too! It must be working because I'm down a few pounds and am holding my own with Brandon in our competition! I'm primarily happy because I feel like I have way more energy than I did before.

A few years ago we got rid of our cable in part to help us afford a membership to the YMCA. (It's also been nice not having cable in the house any more to numb our minds!) I can honestly say that it's the best decision we've made for our health. Child care is "free" with your monthly membership. It is so nice to be able to drop off my kids and go exercise and shower or what ever for up to two whole hours a day. I don't usually them them that long, but it is an option. I made it back to my step aerobics class at the Y yesterday and it felt so awesome to get back into that routine! My kids have so much fun playing in the Y nursery too. Sometimes it can be kind of a hassle packing the kids in the car and going down there. But if I didn't, then I know that I'd never exercise at home. Good luck with your exercise goals. And if you ever want to join the Y...the Blue Ash one is great. You can join me at step aerobics!
ReplyDeleteBec,that's awesome! Hooray for getting in exercise. I've started working out in the mornings before work with a friend from my ward. It's been the best thing to happen to me. I start my day that way, get it out of the way first, and have extra time in the morning to myself and feel energized and ready for the day. I wonder if you have anyone in your ward you could go with every morning while your kids are still asleep? What time does Brandon leave for work?
ReplyDeleteDancing is an awesome way to lose weight and get in some exercise! I'm proud of you. Are you back to your pre-pregnancy weight? Hooray for exercise. I've gotten quite a testimony of it since I've started going each morning.
Way to go! How fun for you and your kids. I hope you win :-)
ReplyDeleteYeah! Dance is fun. I like my DDR - it gets me moving and its fun. Do you sing while you dance? I was watching the Biggest Loser the other night and Bob the trainer said that singing while working out has lots of benefits.
