Random Act of Kindness

Isn't it amazing how someone's random act of kindness can influence you so much?  Today I took our two kids and the little girl I watch to the library for story time.  Before I loaded up the kids into the van, I was out in our driveway cleaning out our van, which involved unloading a bunch of wood, removing way more garbage than is healthy to have in one's vehicle, and taking a laundry basket-full of miscellaneous items back into the house.  The whole time I was doing this, our neighbors diagonally across the street were out mowing their yard.  Actually, it looked like they had some professionals doing their yard because there were two of them using some pretty impressive mowers that I would have loved to have been able to use, but I'm letting myself get distracted (once again) by lawnmowers (I have a not-so-secret fetish).  Back to the story.  So, I cleaned out my van while these guys were mowing, loaded up my kids + little girl, and left to go to story time at the library.  When we returned from a successful library outing, I discovered that our front and possibly the back yard (it's kind of a mess, so it was hard to tell) had been mown!  I was at a loss for words, as my mom can attest to since I was on the phone with her at the time, because we don't really know any of our neighbors very well.  In fact, the only ones we even kind of know are the senior couple on one side of us, the young family who is never home on the other side of us, and the couple directly across the street who both work during the day.  I can only surmise that it was one of the men who had been mowing diagonally across the street from us, but they were no longer outside.  I'm really not sure who did it, though, but I am so grateful to them for this simple act!  Our front yard takes maybe five minutes to cut, but they left the yards on either side of us alone, so I know that our tiny yard was singled out for this kind deed.  I'm not sure what the motivation was, but it was appreciated.  Being the recipient of this service felt so good that I want to go do something kind for someone else so that another can feel like this, too!  So, whoever you are, THANK YOU!

  1. Becca,
I love knowing that there are still good people in the world out doing good deads for others. I experienced the same thing, when I was 8-9 months pregnant it would snow and the thought of shuveling the snow would make me cry because it was so hard on me. Without fail some nice neighbor would shuvel my driveway and I have a LONG driveway so it is no small task. I came home one day and started crying because of the nice gester.

  2. I love it when people do the little things that make a big difference. Like today at Ikea, Camie had dropped her doll (yet again) from sitting in her stroller, and a nice guy walking by stooped right down and picked it up for her.
It's those little acts of kindness that makes me want to pass it on to someone else, you know?
That's awesome, what great neighbors you have.
