Kids Say the Darndest Things: Nicholas Version

We have church from 11-2 now, with a family ward before us and the singles' branch after us.  My mom and dad serve in the singles' branch right now, so we like to stick around for a few minutes after church sometimes to say hi to them.  After I picked up Nicholas from nursery, we walked over to the chapel to see if my parents were done with their Sacrament meeting.  They were not yet done, but Nicholas was having fun working the crowd of singles sitting on the couches in the foyer, so I figured we could wait around for a few minutes until their meeting was done.  Then Nicholas approached one girl to say hi to her, I wrongly assumed. Instead, he stood right in front of her, pointed at her face, and shouted, "SHREK!"  What in the world?!?!  She looked slightly amused, thank goodness!  There was nothing about the girl that even remotely reminded me of anything from Shrek, but I'm pretty sure that "Shrek" is not on anyone's Top Ten Best Names to be Called list.  I wasn't sure what to do in this situation.  Saying, "Nicholas, it's not nice to point at people and call them names," probably would not have gone over well.  Ignoring him would not have made the awkward situation go away.  So, instead I shook my head at him and said, "I don't think Grandma and Grandpa are coming out anytime soon, so let's go find Dad and Renae and go home."  Then we left.  I probably could have said something better, but I couldn't think of ANYthing else to say or do just then.  Kids do develop a filter at some point, don't they???

  1. No, don't plan on a filter for a very long time! I wonder if the girl looked like Fiona or something? :)
