It's never boring around here. Lately Nicholas has done a few things that were especially humorous to me.
Two days ago, I took Nicholas to his doctor's office for his three year check-up. This was the first time they were able to check his vision using a chart. This chart had some pretty basic pictures on them, so the nurse started asking Nicholas what each of the pictures was. A circle, a boat, a square, a star. Basic, right? There was also a picture of a "+". What did Nicholas call this picture? Treasure! As in, X marks the spot! So, with his hand covering each eye, he was already in pirate mode, and would give the nurse a hearty "aerier!" every so often, but more so when he said, "treasure!" in his best pirate voice. Needless to say, I was giggling the entire time, as was the nurse, the doctor standing, and a few other nurses nearby. As if that weren't enough to make this visit memorable, once we were in the exam room, Nicholas kept pretending to run into the wall, fall on the floor, and then pretend to be stuck in the mud while on the ground. While "stuck", he'd reach his hand out and say, "I...need...someone...to...help...me..." The doctor pronounced him "perfect" and declared that he had a well-developed imagination! No kidding!
Yesterday, I was outside digging in our yard once again. Whenever I dig, Nicholas takes it upon himself to rescue all of the earthworms that surface in the process. Whenever he saw one in the mud, he promptly picked it up, took it to another muddy area, dropped it in place, and covered it with more mud. And then he'd ask me if I was proud of him, so I had the pleasure of letting him know that I'm very proud of my little wiggly worm rescuer! He also likes looking for other treasures in our yard. He found several feathers yesterday, which actually looked more like colorful leaves to the rest of us. He took each of these "feathers" and planted them in the mud. I asked him what he was doing, and he told me that he was "planting the feathers to grow peacocks!"
One of my favorite times of the day is when I get my kids up in the morning. Their door sticks, so they can't open it by themselves, and either Brandon or I have to open it for them in the morning. Last night when the kids went to bed, Nicholas was making such a fuss and even told me that he didn't like his shirt and wanted to change it. Or, at least that's what I thought he had said. When I opened the door this morning, I discovered Nicholas reading a book in his bed. Without a shirt on. Then he tossed back his blanket and I noticed that he had different pants on than what he went to bed in. And then I noticed his pajama shorts on the floor next to his pull-up. I asked him what happened, and he told me that he had gone potty in his pull-up last night, so he took it, and his shorts, off last night, and changed into new pants, without any diaper or underwear on. Nicholas slept through the night last night for the first time without a diaper! He was a little wet this morning, but seemed pleased by the arrangement. Progress!

What a smart, creative kid! It's fun to witness how their little brains work. He's growing up fast!
