Updates: Nicholas Edition

My time with Nicholas has started to become a little bittersweet (more sweet than bitter!).  The realization that he will be going to kindergarten--ALL DAY kindergarten--next year is tough to swallow sometimes.  I've loved having him home with me for the last 4 1/2 years, and he is growing up so quickly.  I couldn't be more pleased with the boy he has become, though!

Nicholas is quite a character.  He has some pretty great comedic timing, without even trying to be funny!  I am kept entertained all day long.  For example, here's a recent conversation I overheard between Nicholas and Renae:

Nicholas: Seth and I are bros.
Renae: Yeah...I'm your bro, too!
Nicholas: No you're not. You're a bro-sis. Because you have girl toys.

Nicholas spends a lot of his time being creative.  He loves Legos (of course!) and specializes in spaceships, robots, and Transformers.  He also enjoys playing with his friend Garrett, whose grandmother lives next door to us.  The two of them often play superheroes all the time, and they make Renae play the role of the villain "because she's easy to catch."

We also have a master storyteller on our hands.  I learned how to make little books over the summer, so Nicholas decided to "write" a book last week:

"Once upon a time, there was a dragon fighter named Bugle.  One time he had a chance to fight a dragon of doom.  The next day, the king's dragon of doom festival started at midnight when it was dark. He would get his chance to fight in the morning.  The dragon of doom presented the sun in his belly.  Bugle lost the battle.  Nothing could be done for the dragon fighter.  The end."

A little brutal, but I was pretty impressed when he told me his story!

He is also super sweet when it comes to taking care of his mom!  The other day we were crossing the street, and he started pulling me along rather roughly.  I scolded him and told him to not run.  He responded by saying that he was trying to get me out of the road so that I wouldn't get hit.  Nicholas has definitely taken on the man of the house role while Brandon's been traveling with work.  He always makes sure that we say prayers when we go places so that we'll be safe.

With starting kindergarten next year, we've been working harder with Nicholas learning to write.  He pretty much knows all of his letters, but sometimes mixes them up.  But, when I write words on a paper, he can generally copy them.  My apologies that this isn't a great copy.  He wanted to write "Doodle," which is what my mom calls him.

Nicholas likes to draw stories, too.  He draws people and then includes all of the actions that they are doing, etc.  I find TONS of pictures like this one all over the place.

We love you, kiddo!
