Renae's Seizure Update
Some of you probably heard about this already, but some haven't, so I thought I'd put it out there. Last Thursday, Renae had another seizure--a longer one--and was unconscious for about 8 minutes after it was over. She was only unconscious for about a minute after her last one, so I was pretty scared and called 911. The paramedics arrived just as she was waking up. I also had called my friend, Sarah, to come watch Nicholas and Isabella for me, and she and her two kids arrived just after the paramedics. Fortunately, Brandon was already down by Children's Hospital, so once the paramedics determined that Renae was okay enough for me to take her myself, I met him down at the ER at Children's. Let me just say that I am so grateful for having such good friends in our lives! While I was on my way to Children's, Brandon had called around to a couple of people in our ward to help give Renae a blessing. One is a doctor at Children's, but he was on an international conference call, so he couldn't help with the blessing. Then Brandon called another man in our ward, who also couldn't help, but he called his brother (also in our ward), and he arrived at the same time I did. After we got checked in, we pulled off to a corner of the waiting room for them to give her a blessing. What comfort! We were told that she would be fine and that we just needed to listen and follow the doctor's instructions. I also found out later that Brandon had called his dad and granparents, and they all put Renae's name on the temple prayer roll. I called my parents, who were harder to get in touch with because they were with my grandparents on a sand dune at the beach, but once I got in touch with them, they also stopped and prayed for Renae. Thank you all so much! We weren't in the waiting room very long, but after waiting around for a while in our room, I finally asked Brandon to go take over for Sarah so that she could get her kids home. A few minutes after he left, the resident came in and checked her out. While the resident was there, the friend from our ward who is a doctor there, came in and sat with me for a few minutes after the resident left and reassured me that seizures associated with breath holding spells don't cause any permanent damage. After he left, the supervising physician came in and checked out Renae, too, and also found no reason for concern. We already had an appointment scheduled with the neurology department at Children's next Friday, so they told us to keep that appointment and to call and arrange for an EEG before that appointment. We left after being there for about 2 hours with a prescription for a seizure medicine to give Renae if she has another one. The information they printed off for me was very helpful, but I don't like the fact that it said that having had two seizures now, there is a 60-70% chance of her having another one some time. However, I've known people (and our old dog) who had seizures, so I know that they are manageable. I'm hoping that once she grows out of her breath holding spells that the seizures will also stop. Please just keep the little munchkin in your prayers this week!
